Get to know the driving force behind MDEC
In order to navigate an intricate and fast-changing digital economy, MDEC put together a management team that boasts extensive knowledge in many areas of our business. The Board of Directors is made up of representatives from the Government and corporate sectors, lead by Chairman of the board YBhg. Tan Sri Sidek Hassan.
The Board of Directors is ultimately responsible for the country’s tech-led initiatives, be it in terms of direction, strategic supervision, or management. With their blend of diversity and high-level expertise, there is no better team to guide MDEC towards a tech-led economy.
Tan Sri Sidek Hassan is the Chairman of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the lead agency in driving the digital economy in Malaysia, a position he assumed in May 2016.
He is also the Chairman of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), the national oil and gas corporation of Malaysia since July 2012 and recently in May 2017, he was appointed as the Chairman of KLCC Property Holdings Berhad and KLCC REIT Management Sdn Bhd. He is also the Chairman of KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd.
He was a former board member of Top Glove Corporation Berhad and Malayan Flour Mills Berhad.
Prior to July 2012, Tan Sri Sidek served in the Administrative and Diplomatic Service of the Malaysian Civil Service for over 38 years, the last six years as the Chief Secretary to the Government.
Tan Sri Sidek began his career on 15 April 1974 as an Assistant Director at the International Trade Division, Ministry of Trade and Industry. He has extensive working experience within the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) including postings at MITI offices in Tokyo (Japan), Sydney (Australia) and Washington, D.C. (USA). He was appointed as Deputy Secretary-General (Trade) on 19 January 2001 and as the Secretary-General of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry on 24 October 2004.
Tan Sri Sidek served as President of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) between 2008 and 2013, and is currently the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).
Tan Sri Sidek holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Degree in Public Administration from University of Malaya and Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from New Hampshire College, United States of America.
He also holds Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR), Honorary Doctorate Degree in Management from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Honorary Doctorate Degree in Management from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Honorary Doctorate Degree in International Business from IIUM.
YBhg. Datuk Yasmin Mahmood was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), effective 15 September 2014. She was appointed to the Board on 19 January 2015.
Her career prior to joining MDEC includes leadership positions such as Executive Director of YTL e-Solutions Bhd., Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., Regional Manager of Dell Asia Pacific and General Manager of HP Sales Malaysia.
YBhg. Dato' Mathialakan Chelliah is MDEC's Company Director and was appointed to the Board on 19 January 2015.
He has served the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) for more than 30 years in various capacities and senior positions. From 1988 - 2008, he served in several MIDA overseas offices in Zurich, Berne, Milan and London to promote Malaysia as a potential investment location for European companies and to assist them to prepare their business models.
YBhg. Datuk Siti Zauyah currently serves as Deputy Secretary General of the Treasury (Policy). She was appointed to the Board on 1st May 2016.
YBhg. Datuk Siti Zauyah joined the Ministry of Finance Malaysia ("MOF") in 1989 and served in various divisions, among others, the Contract Management Division, the Tax Division, the Loans Management Division, the Government Investment Company Division and The Budget Division.
YBrs. En. Steve Hsia is currently the co-Founder and CEO of Young Outliers, Inc. and was appointed to the Board on 27 January 2015. Steve is an active Internet business angel investor focusing in Silicon Valley and Asia with various experiences with digital agencies, talents and start-ups.
YBrs. Tuan Haji Mohamed Rifai was appointed to the Board on 22 August 2016.
Tuan Haji Mohamed Rifai started his career in the Sabah State Civil Service in 1980. From 1983 until 1989 he was with Sabah Energy Corporation/Sabah Gas Industries Sdn. Bhd. holding various positions.
Prior to his early retirement, Tuan Haji Mohamed Rifai was the CEO of IIB Insurance Brokers Sdn. Bhd. In addition to that he was also a Board member with KKIP Communications Sdn. Bhd, the operator of Sabah Net. He currently sits on the Board of Progressive Insurance Bhd.
YBhg. Dato' Sri Mohd Shukri has served the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for more than 30 years in various capacities and senior positions. He joined MACC in 1984 as an Investigation Officer at the Accounts Investigation Division, MACC Headquarters.
He has been involved in many investigation related to accounts, banks and financial companies. He mostly involved in the investigation of many corruptions cases. In 2006, he was assigned to MACC Headquarters and appointed as the Director of Investigations. In 2010 he was promoted as the Deputy Chief Commissioner Operation. He retired in October 2016 at the age of 56.
YBhg. Datuk Bazlan Osman was appointed on the Board of Directors of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), effective 22 February 2018.
He is currently the Executive Director and Deputy Group CEO of Telekom Malaysia Berhad, and oversees the operations of TM's main business clusters. He sits on the board of several subsidiaries within the TM Group, including Webe Digital Sdn Bhd, VADs Berhad and is also the Chairman of Fiberail Sdn Bhd.
