2 June 2016

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 June 2016 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, to strengthen UK-Malaysia partnerships in the ICT sector.

The MoU will see both countries jointly promoting the adoption of Digital Economy solutions, particularly in areas such as Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud, Big Data Analytics (BDA), Cybersecurity, e-Commerce and Fintech in addition to artificial intelligence; encouraging academia and industry collaboration. It will also facilitate the implementation of joint projects on research and development, as well as innovations in respect to sustainable smart cities development and technologies.

Speaking at the event, H.E. Vicki Treadell, British High Commissioner to Malaysia, said, “Building on the long-standing historical ties and people links, the UK wants to partner Malaysia in cross-cutting technology, as a way to take our engagement into the future.”

This was echoed by Richard Graham, UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Malaysia, who is in Kuala Lumpur for a series of engagements following his appointment earlier this year. He said, “The UK has a thriving technology sector thanks to its ability to develop and apply technology in various other sectors such as retail and banking. We can share with Malaysia our experience in digital economy transformation”.

"As Malaysia continues to embrace Digital Economy, it is becoming increasingly important for us to collaborate with other pioneers in this sector to further push the boundaries of innovation," said Dato' Yasmin Mahmood, CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). "With this in mind, we are proud to partner with UKTI to fast-track the development of the domestic digital economy as well as provide opportunities for businesses from both nations to collaborate and enhance talent capabilities."

The MoU was signed by H.E. Vicki Treadell and Dato’ Yasmin Mahmood, Chief Executive Officer of MDEC. It was witnessed by Dato’ Ng Wan Peng, Chief Operating Officer, MDEC and Andrew Cockburn, Head of Trade-Technology Team of UKTI. Also present were Dato’ Sri Dr Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad, Secretary General of the Malaysian Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and Mr. Graham.
